After the extremely successful debut of our chief conductor Jonathan Darlington at the New Year’s Concerts in 2023, you can expect a new edition in 2024 under the same motto: “Dance with your darling 2.0” – as an update, so to speak, with a new program full of highlights of dance-influenced symphonic music. In addition to musical masterpieces from the noble pens of the Romantics Georges Bizet and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the Symphony Orchestra exudes a lot of good mood for the New Year: sometimes with melodies by the “musical king” Richard Rodgers, sometimes with the Spanish temperament of Émile Waldteufel’s concert waltz España or the rousing 2nd Clarinet Concerto by Óscar Navarro, who made a name for himself not least with his film scores for Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures. In addition, you can once again look forward to the great soloist Sharon Kam, undoubtedly one of the greatest masters of her craft for over two decades.

The Financial Times described him as “one of the most exciting composers of his generation” – Magnus Lindberg, born in Helsinki in 1958, like Sibelius also a Finn. As with the Old Master, Lindberg’s work focuses on symphonic and concertante orchestral works. His Clarinet Concerto is an ambitious, exciting, touching work. At times poetic and atmospheric, then it lets frightening visions of the apocalypse rise, and it also picks up speed, especially in the extremely virtuoso solo part. Our soloist, clarinet star Sebastian Manz, is a congenial interpreter of this work. He makes the nervously pulsating rhythms dance, revels in poetry and advances to the highest heights of his instrument. After the interval, it’s back to Romanticism with Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2, the resounding Finnish national monument par excellence. At the opening, we present the overture to Schubert’s opera Fierrabras, set in the knightly milieu of the Middle Ages. An afternoon of concerts about knights, rhythm and romance. Xyz
